Stories about finding something valuable at a yard sale aren't myths. Original concert posters, first-edition books, artworks by notable artists, pieces of jewelry worth far more than the $5 asking price — these discoveries happen because sellers often don't know what they have, and most shoppers aren't looking carefully either.
Google Lens can identify objects, read text, and pull up similar items for sale online. It's not perfect, but it can quickly tell you if something is a common reproduction or potentially rare. eBay sold listings show what similar items have actually sold for.
If you find something valuable that the seller has clearly mispriced, you're not obligated to disclose it. But don't negotiate further on something you know is worth significantly more. Pay the asking price and consider it a fair discovery.
